Obstetric violence: a health system study

Background: Disrespect and abuse during facility-based childbirth is a global problem with differing driving factors in different contexts. Obstetric Violence (OV) refers to professional deficiencies maternity care. The objective of this study was assess knowledge attitudes towards OV cohort members the obstetric healthcare team at tertiary care, teaching hospital Western India (Mumbai).Methods: A questionnaire-based involving 80 participants comprising trainee doctors faculty, nursing students, staff teachers from department Obstetrics Gynaecology administration.Results: 57.97% had heard term ‘Obstetric violence’ earlier. 75.36% reported verbal as form OV, others being physical abuse, non-consented discriminatory abandonment/neglect or refusal care imposition interventions without scientific basis. 53% 89.8% did not consider routine episiotomies artificial rupture membrane respectively forms OV. 84.06% 59.4% considered instrumental delivery consent Caesarean section citing safety/convenience 82.6% endorsed need birth companion. Improving number training providers better institutional policies on respectful were suggested solutions.Conclusions: Majority witnessed some for practical personnel infrastructure system emphasised, but there appeared be lack consciousness paternalistic mindset approach women labour.
